Free CELPIP Writing Checker
Updated 20 October 2026 · By the CELPIP TIP team
Short answer: pick Task 1 (email) or Task 2 (survey), write or paste your answer, and this checker shows at once whether you are inside the 150 to 200 word guideline, whether your answer has clear paragraphs, a greeting and sign-off (Task 1) or a stated choice (Task 2), and which plain words you repeat. The prompts are real practice prompts from the CELPIP TIP app. It is free, needs no account and nothing you type leaves your browser.
What the checker looks at
- Word count. The guideline for both tasks is 150 to 200 words. Under 135 or over 220 words may lower your score, so the meter turns red there.
- Paragraphs. Three or four paragraphs (an opening, the body, a closing) with a blank line between them are easier for a rater to follow.
- Task 1 email: a greeting at the top and a sign-off at the end. Tick each bullet point of the prompt as you cover it: missing one is the most common way to lose task fulfillment marks.
- Task 2 survey: no greeting is needed, and your first paragraph should say which option you choose.
- Plain words. "Very", "good", "nice" or "a lot" used three times or more. Precise words lift your vocabulary score.
- Very long sentences over 35 words, which often hide run-ons.
What it can't check: the 4 CELPIP criteria
CELPIP raters score every Writing answer on four criteria. Rules can catch length and structure, but not whether your ideas are developed or your grammar is right. That needs a rater, a tutor or AI scoring.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a free CELPIP Writing checker?
Yes. This page checks your answer for free in your browser: the 150 to 200 word guideline, paragraphs, a greeting and sign-off for Task 1, a clear choice for Task 2, and plain words you repeat. It does not score content or grammar. For that, CELPIP TIP's AI Coach scores your answer on the four CELPIP criteria (a Gold feature).
How many words should a CELPIP Writing answer have?
Both tasks ask for about 150 to 200 words. The test shows a word count under the typing area. Fewer than 135 or more than 220 words may lower your score.
Does the CELPIP Writing test have spell check?
Yes. The CELPIP Writing test has a basic spell check, a word counter and editing tools such as cut, copy, paste and undo (CELPIP-General Overview Study Pack 2026). Its suggestions can offer the wrong word, so still read your answer through.
Can ChatGPT check my CELPIP Writing?
A general chatbot can comment on grammar and wording. To get feedback that matches the test, ask it to rate the four CELPIP criteria (content and coherence, vocabulary, readability, task fulfillment) and to check that you covered every point in the prompt. A CELPIP tool such as the CELPIP TIP AI Coach does that for every answer and gives a level from 1 to 12.
