CELPIP Writing Task 2: Useful expressions

For CELPIP Writing Task 2, vary the phrases you use to give an opinion, such as "Personally, I think", "In my view" or "As far as I'm concerned". This list also covers conditions (if, unless, provided that) and summing up (all in all, in conclusion, to sum up).

CELPIP Writing Task 2 (Responding to Survey Questions) - Useful expressions

It is a must to write or speak. It is better to use various expressions rather than one or two fixed expressions.

  • Personally, I think ...
  • What I understand is ...
  • The way I see it is...
  • As far as I'm concerned, ...
  • I'm convinced that ...
  • In my opinion, ...
  • In my view, ...
  • From my point of view, ...
  • I suppose ...
  • It seems to me that ...

(2) Expressing Condition

Using conditional clauses does not simplify writing.

  • If

I'll bring some wine if you want <-> If you want, I'll bring some wine.

  • Whether

Mike didn't know whether Mary would arrive on Saturday or Sunday.

  • Unless (=If ~ not)

We'll arrive at 5:00pm. unless our flight is late

  • Provided that/Given that

I will come, provided that I am invited.

  • In the case of

In case of delay, all information needs to be adapted

(3) Summarizing an opinion

Adding a summary at the end of the article is easy to understand.

  • After all,
  • All in all,
  • All things considered,
  • Briefly/In brief,
  • In conclusion,
  • On the whole,
  • In short,
  • In summary,
  • To sum up,
  • To summarize,
  • Finally,
  • I'd like to wind up/finish/ by saying that...
  • Before I finish I'd finally like to say that...
  • To summarize my (rather complex) views on the matter,
